Hobo Nickel’s Story
This coin carving culture dates back to the late 18th century. During the Great Depression in the United States, the economic crisis swept over capitalist countries, and a series of chain reactions occurred in the United States: crazy runs, bank closures, factory closures, worker unemployment, poverty, organized resistance, and the brink of civil war.
All art comes from life, and it is the special late 18th century that made this special art. “Wanderer’s Coin” came into being.
The vast majority of Americans are faced with serious survival problems. Large scale unemployment has deprived many people of their economic resources. They began to beautify some coins by carving, so that they could add artistic and communication value and support their own food, clothing, housing and transportation.
At that time, the restaurant owners, including the hotel owners, never felt difficult for these “down and out” vagrants, not only did they not reject these coins, but they gladly accepted them, and were willing to provide them with services and products that exceeded the value of coins.
